Resignation from the British Army

Part of the K.O.R.L.R. contingent in Dublin at the time was the Standing Medical Brigade, based at Richmond Barracks.

On 15th April 1919, William attended a medical board at Richmond Barracks.

His trench feet were again diagnosed as a problem and the Board said it accounted for 20% of his disability. He would not be fit for A – General Service, B – service in a garrison or labour unit abroad but would be fit for C – home service, active service with home troops. His service history is incorrect as stated before.

William wrote, on 7th May 1919, to his C.O., to be allowed to resign from the army as he was unfit to serve.

This started a train of letters and memos in the army to make effective his resignation. Interestingly, an internal army memo also advised that William7rsquo;s father should also be notified of what was happening with William’s resignation from the army.

But when William was warned (probably by other officers in his Bn.) that he would be placed on ½ pay with the resignation, he wrote another letter to remain in the army. He sought a further hearing before the Medical Board to be declared fit for General Service.

Some months passed and during this time his application for a further hearing before the Medical Board was processed. In the meantime, sometime in May or June 1919 he was placed on half pay.

Maybe at this time he has talked to his father and some arrangement was struck as to William’s future. The army received another letter from William dated around 2nd August 1919, asking again to resign.

Finally, on 5th August 1919 William was granted approval to resign from the army.
